SUSTAINABILITY AT A GLANCE
1 2 3 4 5
MALT Stars culture Shapes how our employees think , behave and act in all countries .
Modal shift The transition from higher - carbon transport modes to lower carbon alternatives .
Organic waste Biodegradable material generated by operations that can be recovered through composting , energy production or agricultural use .
Pedoclimatic Relates to the combined effects of soil ( pedo ) and climate on plant growth , agriculture and ecosystems .
Regenerative agriculture Agricultural approach aimed at decarbonizing the value chain , strengthening soil resilience , and enhancing biodiversity , while contributing to the improvement
of water quality in agriculture and the creation of long - term sustainable value .
SAI The Sustainable Agriculture Initiative ( SAI ) is a global organization that promotes sustainable practices in agriculture .
Science Based Targets initiative ( SBTi ) A global initiative that validates corporate climate targets aligned with climate science .
Scope 1 emissions Direct greenhouse gas emissions from sources owned or controlled by the company .
Scope 2 emissions Indirect greenhouse gas emissions from purchased electricity , heat or cooling .
Scope 3 emissions Indirect greenhouse gas emissions occurring across the value chain .
Site All Souff let Malt locations with industrial activities , including malthouses and distribution centres and excluding head off ices .
Steeping The f irst stage of the malting process , barley grains are soaked in water .
Sustainable barley Sustainable barley refers to raw materials being produced under agroecological specif ications based on prescribed practices and / or performance requirements ,
which may be subject to audit by an independent third - party body , or covered by recognized certif ication schemes . SAI / FSA
approach , or its equivalent , is one
of this schemes .
Upstream transportation and distribution Transportation of raw materials and inputs to production sites .
Downstream transportation and distribution Transportation of f inished products to customers .
Vermicomposting A biological process using worms to convert organic waste into fertiliser .
Waste hierarchy A prioritisation framework for waste management : prevent , reuse , recycle , recover , dispose .
Waste recovered Covers all waste that has undergone a recovery operation , in accordance with the R codes def ined by the European Waste Framework Directive .
Included : waste from operational activities ( paper / cardboard , recyclable plastics , metals , wood , glass , organic waste or bio - waste sent for composting
or methanisation ) . Excluded : waste sent to landf ill or incineration without energy recovery ( D operations ) .
Water consumption The total volume of water withdrawn within the boundaries of the company .
Water - stressed region An area where water demand exceeds available supply .
KPI DEFINITIONS
KPI DEFINITION
Absolute greenhouse gas emissions The total amount of greenhouse gases emitted by an entity , without considering any offsets or reductions .
Accident severity rate The rate or gravity of temporary disabilities : ratio between the number of calendar days actually lost due to occupational accidents
and the number of hours exposed to the risk , multiplied by 1 , 000 .
Energy consumption This indicator measures the total amount of energy consumed by the entity for its own activities , including non - renewable fuels , renewable fuels , purchased energy
and self - generated energy , expressed in MWh .
Energy intensity Total energy consumption per tonne of saleable malt .
