CRAFTING MALT THAT
PROTECTS THE LAND AND THE
SPECIES WHO DEPEND ON IT
Cranes ’ Landing is no ordinary farm .
The site protects nearly 400 acres of
habitat for endangered Sandhill cranes ,
and every decision , including how
and when we plant , is based on their
needs . Barley is grown and harvested only
when the cranes have migrated and , after
harvest , f ields are intentionally left open for
the birds to forage as they return .
This collaboration is a benchmark
for sustainability as crop revenue is
reinvested directly into land stewardship
to support native tree and shrub planting ,
prairie restoration , thoughtful crop rotation
and a preference for lower - water - use
crops . Each of these practices strengthens
soil health , protects habitats and preserves
the region ’ s natural beauty .
In Washington State , our team
partnered with Columbia Land Trust
to create a truly local , limited - release
malt : Pure Washington , made from
barley grown on the conservation
lands of Cranes ’ Landing .
